Does Worker Say You Shouldn't Eat Them?

Working in a restaurant offers a flexible way to earn a living, even if you don’t have much experience or education. It can be fast-paced, lucrative, and ultimately become a fulfilling career. But like any job, restaurant work is not without its headaches.

Just to name a few: Whiny customers, lazy coworkers, gross experiences of the walk-in variety, and the fact that it often involves hard, physical labor. A Subway worker went massively viral this week for highlighting one of the banes of many a restaurant employee’s existence: prep work. Specifically, slicing tomatoes.

Usually people side with workers. Not this time. Many of the most-liked comments are from people demanding that they get exactly what they order or threatening to ask for extra tomatoes. Some have even threatened to find the worker’s Subway to order something with lots of tomatoes.

Creator @sub.way020 is taking it in stride. She’s responded to the comments with a positive attitude that stands in stark contrast to how she feels about slicing tomatoes.

An ‘Easier’ Way To Slice

In her TikTok, @sub.way020 films herself struggling with an industrial tomato slicer. These contraptions thinly slice an entire tomato at a time.

The device appears similar to one that retails for nearly $500. They’re designed to make prepping soft fruits and vegetables faster, more consistent, and safer.

They only become problematic when the blades dull.

That appears to be the issue with @sub.way020’s slicer. In the post, the Subway worker is clearly using a lot of force to get those tomatoes sliced.

She keeps jamming the blades against the tomato to no avail. The blades don’t seem to be sharp enough to puncture the skin. She uses so much force, in fact, that she appears to cut herself at the end.

In the text overlay, @sub.way020 writes, “Next time you wanna add tomatoes just remember what we have to go through.”

She adds in the caption, “At 6am.”

The TikTok has nearly 9 million views as of this writing.

In a follow-up, @sub.way020 concedes that the slicer is the problem. “Our tomato slicer is dull, and the tomatoes were very ripe,” she says. “That is not an everyday occurrence. The end.”

‘I Don’t Care I Want Extra’

People are largely unmoved by the Subway worker’s tomato-slicing woes. There doesn’t seem to be much sympathy for @sub.way020 specifically or Subway workers generally.

“I’ll ask for extra next time,” Chelsea vowed. Over 270,000 people liked this comment.

A comment with over 90,000 likes reads, “Yeahhh you better be making them right, just for me.”

@sub.way020 is giving as good as she gets in response to such comments.

When someone sarcastically suggested that she’s only be asked to do her job, @sub.way020 retorted, “It’s a TikTok go away.”

Another joked, “It’s always what the subway worker is going through and not the tomato.” The worker saucily replied, “The tomato consented.”

At least one person offered helpful advice. “Ask your manager for new blades,” Gabby Carnivore suggested. “This only happens due to dull blades.”
