Crypto scammers choose worst day ever to hack Team Liquid as everyone thinks it’s a joke

Team Liquid

Famed esports organization Team Liquid lost access to its X account after a crypto scammer hacked it, and some have been left under the false impression it’s all an April Fools joke.

Ever since the rise of crypto, bad actors have found their way into some of the biggest accounts on social media as a way to attempt to scam those who follow it.

Some famous examples include McDonald’s losing control of its Instagram account back in August 2024, when a crypto scammer took control of it to promote a memecoin modeled after one of the company’s mascots, Grimace.

On Tuesday, April 1, Team Liquid became the latest victim after a crypto scammer took control of their account on X.

The post advertised an aptly named memecoin called $Liquid and even included the address needed to buy the token.

“For over two decades, Team Liquid has been at the forefront of esports, competing, innovating, and building a legacy that spans generations,” it read as the post attempted to sound like it was coming from the actual team.

Users quickly flocked to the comments as the post went viral, with some questioning whether or not it was some form of April Fools’ Day joke.

However, the team’s social media manager quickly joined the conversation to make it clear it wasn’t them who posted the tweet.

“Everyone this is NOT Team Liquid,” they said. “Please do not interact and engage with the account.”

Liquid’s Valorant and DOTA teams followed suit, revealing that the main account was indeed hacked by a crypto scammer. The post has since been deleted, meaning the team has likely recovered access to the account.

Back in August, tech YouTuber Linus Sebastian revealed how scammers took control of the Linus Tech Tips account on X, sharing that he was sent an email claiming their account was accessed in Russia. He quickly followed the included link to reset the password, but was, in fact, giving a scammer control of the page.
