Depending on where you park, it can be pretty easy to rack up a hefty parking ticket.
Everybody handles the receipt of these parking tickets differently. Some flaunt them. Some attempt to contest them. And others find unique ways to protest them, such as paying their bill entirely in pennies.
Still, if you own a car, eventually getting hit with a large parking bill is simply a fact of life. However, after parking at JFK Airport’s long-term lot, TikTok user Kat (@katianaa__) realized just how wild a parking bill can be.
In a video with over 531,000 views, Kat shows what she says is the payment terminal for the long-term parking lot at JFK Airport.
What Was This Woman’s Parking Fee?
On the screen of the payment terminal, it shows how much Kat allegedly owes: $12,722.50.
“When you’re just trying to leave the long term parking lot, but you have to pay a fee of $12,722.50,” she writes in the text overlaying the video.
“I thought that was a phone number to call or something,” she adds.
Kat is responding to comments about the incident. However, she has not clarified how she was able to rack up such a massive bill. Though, she stated that she did not pay the bill. In another comment, she implies that she was able to get around payment by calling.
Still, many were left wondering what exactly happened here.
How Did This Happen?
On the JFK airport’s website, it’s listed that the first 24 hours of long-term parking has a drive-up rate of $55, and it’s $27.50 “over 24 hours, each 12 hours or fraction thereof.”
This would mean that, in order to accrue this bill from parking alone, she would have needed to park her car in long-term parking for over 230 days.
In short, this was likely just a glitch in the system. It should be said, however, that if one really plans to leave their car for over 200 days, there are definitely better—and cheaper—places to do it than the long-term parking lot at the airport. And it’s almost certainly going to be less expensive to simply leave your car parked at home and take a taxi to the airport.
Commenters Are In Disbelief
In the comments section, users were shocked by the high fees. Some offered their own solutions to Kat’s apparent problem.
“That’s more than my car is worth. Y’all can just keep the car, I’m walking out,” joked a user.
“Go to the other side get a new ticket and use it to leave,” suggested another. In response to a similar comment, Kat noted that the parking system read license plates, making this advice unusable.
“One time I lost my ticket and just hurried up and drove out with the car in front of me,” offered a third.
“This is why I see broken gates all over the place because dammit I’m not even giving you $2 if you try to bill me that much,” declared a further TikToker.
