Although the Primetime Emmy Awards are often seen as the “main” portion of the Emmy Awards, the Creative Arts Emmys are equally as important. These awards honor “outstanding artistic and technical achievement in television” and give credit where credit is due to some of the most spectacular series of the year. This time around, at the 75th Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies, we at Nerdist felt delighted to see some of our favorite nerdy shows come out on top. In fact, one of our best shows of 2023, The Last of Us, took home the most awards out of any show on night one of the awards, which focused on scripted series. The Last of Us recieved eight awards, including a couple that honored some truly meaningful performances.
Additionally, Nerdist favorite Wednesday won four Creative Arts Emmys. And one of our favorite oddball entries, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, came out on top more than once. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly our favorite TV series and movies won at the Creative Arts Emmys.
The Last of Us‘ Creative Arts Emmy Wins
As mentioned, The Last of Us took home eight Emmys at the Creative Arts Awards, the most of any series on night one. It’s worth noting that the shows with the second-most Emmy wins of the evening had four each, so The Last of Us came out ahead with double the wins. The Last of Us‘ victories include: Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for the Infected (so well deserved), Outstanding Special Visual Effects, Outstanding Main Title Design, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Picture Editing.
Additionally, The Last of Us took home two very special awards for Outstanding Guest Actress and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. These went to Stormy Reid as Riley Abel and Nick Offerman as Bill. Both these roles involved meaningful and poignant queer love stories, and we feel delighted to see their talented actors credited for them.
Wednesday Wins Big
Netflix’s Wednesday also won big at the Creative Arts Emmys. The series became part of a three-way tie for the second-most awards won at the scripted ceremonies. Wednesday won four Emmys. Its victories included Outstanding Contemporary Costumes for a Series, Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program, and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music. We do love Wednesday‘s theme very much.
The popular Netflix series is currently heading into season two.
Weird and Other Nerdist-Friendly Wins
The Creative Arts Emmys were also kind to one of Nerdist‘s favorite TV movies of the year, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. After all, who could resist Daniel Radcliffe getting to delight in being a little extra weird? Weird won for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Musical Composition.
Among the rest of the Creative Arts Emmy victors, Ted Lasso won for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, House of the Dragon won for Outstanding Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costumes (although we might have given it to The Rings of Power), and The Boys won for Outstanding Stunt Coordination. Finally, The Mandalorian won for Outstanding Stunt Performance, Ms. Marvel won for Outstanding Motion Design, and Prey won for Outstanding Sound Editing.
