Neil Young has canceled plans to perform in Ukraine. The Canadian activist and symbol of rock and roll shared an update on his official website, citing undependable conditions in the region that could put his crew and others at risk.

After plainly stating: “Our concert in Ukraine is cancelled,” Young continued, providing context on the decision: “We had a good venue, close to a shelter, but the changing situation on the ground was too much. I could not in good conscience take my crew and instruments into that area.”

Young concluded his statement by saying, “My apologies to all. Ukraine is a great country with a good leader.” He then added the sign-off, “Slava Ukraini,” the Ukrainian national salute symbolizing sovereignty and resistance against hostile foreign aggressors.

The “Heart of Gold” singer initially announced that he and his Chrome Hearts Band would kick off the European leg of their Love Earth tour in Ukraine–a politically charged decision following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s late February visit to the White House. This decision was a significant political statement.

Despite the cancellation of the Ukrainian stop, Young’s tour continues. He will now kick off his summer jaunt in Europe with nine stops before returning to the States for a series of coast-to-coast appearances and a special evening in his native Toronto.
