John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme was released 60 years ago this winter, and Monday, December 9 marked six decades since the album was recorded in a single evening session. To mark the anniversary of one of the most iconic and influential jazz albums of all time, Impulse! Records is releasing A Love Supreme: 60th Anniversary Edition, a limited run pressing on diamond vinyl. The reissue is available for pre-order now and will be released on Feb. 7, 2025, 60 years to the day after the original A Love Supreme release.
In addition to the reissue, the A Love Supreme anniversary will be celebrated with a special event at Winter Jazzfest 2025 in New York City. “Impressions: Improvisatory Interpretations on A Love Supreme” will take place January 12 at Roulette in Brooklyn. Ravi Coltrane, son of John and Alice Coltrane, will headline the show with his quartet including David Virelles, Jeff “Tain” Watts and Dezron Douglas. After their performance, there will be a round-robin set with guest improvisers including Allison Miller, Angelica Sanchez, Ben Williams, James Brandon Lewis, Joel Ross, Kalia Vandever, Kassa Overall, Kenny Warren, Linda May Han Oh, Melissa Aldana, Nasheet Waits, Rafiq Bhatia, Sam Newsome, Tomoki Sanders, and more. Tickets are available now.
Coltrane recorded A Love Supreme at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, playing the tenor sax in a quartet including pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. The four-part suite is a landmark in the field of spiritual jazz and jazz as a whole, ushering the genre and Coltrane’s career into a new era.
“When A Love Supreme was recorded on December 9, 1964, it was the midpoint of a decade that was about to catch fire,” historian Ashley Kahn wrote in a new tribute to the album. “Global shifts in politics, culture, and spirituality — in society in general — were right around the corner. In its sound and spirit, John Coltrane’s most enduringly popular album was the right sound and the right idea at the right time.”
