Jacob Collier and Chris Thile Unite for One Night Only at The Blue Note (A Gallery)
Alex H. Krinsky on October 18, 2022
Last night, Jacob Collier and Chris Thile performed three sold-out shows at the historic Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. With lines stretched around the block in Greenwich Village for each of the three sets – 8 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. – the collaboration had the makings for one of the hottest tickets in the entire city.
During each of the sets, the 28-year-old English maestro and the Brooklyn-based virtuoso mandolinist started the performances by saying to the crowd that they made an agreement not to play any of their own songs but instead plan to tackle covers by artists they both deeply admire.
Some of the covers they expertly executed include Bill Withers’ “Use Me,” Moses Sumney & Sufjan Stevens’ “Make Out in My Car,” “Samson and Delilah” by the Grateful Dead, “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” by Bob Dylan, “Tell Me Something Good” by Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl” and many more. Other highlights included Collier harmonizing the audience, a tease of “Atlantic City” from Thile, along with a constant and discernible admiration between the two musicians.
