Anna Wintour On "Similarities" To 'Devil Wears Prada' Character

After more than 20 years, Anna Wintour has enough distance from The Devil Wears Prada to enjoy an evening at the theater.

While attending a gala performance for the West End musical version of the 2006 film, the Vogue editrix addressed comparisons between herself and the character Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep) from the movie and the bestselling 2003 novel by Wintour’s former assistant Lauren Weisberger.

She told the BBC that it’s “for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”

Directed by David Frankel, The Devil Wears Prada stars Anne Hathaway as Andy, a recent college graduate desperate for a job in journalism when she is hired as the assistant to Streep’s diabolical Miranda, a position that proves detrimental to her personal life and sanity.

Streep won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Miranda.

Starring Vanessa Williams as the Runway editor, the stage musical’s current run at the West End’s Dominion Theatre kicked off in October, following the 2022 run in Chicago. It features an original score by Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub & Mark Sonnenblick, a book by Kate Wetherhead and direction & choreography by Jerry Mitchell.

Meanwhile, Disney has tapped the original movie’s screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna to pen a sequel, which was in early development in July. Original producer Wendy Finerman is back with Frankel in talks to return to the director’s chair.
