As we gear up for Season 6 of The Going There with Dr. Mike podcast, we’re opening the archives to reveal a full, never-before-released video episode featuring Yungblud. Ahead of more insightful, impactful conversations with your favorite artists at the crossroads of music and mental health debuting May 20th, check out Yungblud’s episode above or via YouTube, or listen via the player above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Taken from Season 5, this unreserved discussion finds Yungblud, the British artist aka Dominic Richard Harrison, opening up about his mental health journey. Through fear of change and worries about losing oneself in treatment, Yungblud has utilized simple grounding techniques such as smelling coffee or putting his feet in grass. “A lot of us can feel like we’re watching ourselves from like a video game perspective instead of feeling in the center of our head,” he says. “And I would literally just be like, ‘It’s fine. Just go rub your hands on your fabric. Go, I don’t know, stick your head in the fridge for 10 minutes or some shit.”
Bringing fans into the realities of his own wellness struggles has been a vital part of the Yungblud persona — and that’s not by accident: “Yungblud isn’t me; I’m just like, hello, I’m the person on the fucking CD cover. But it’s more than music. Music is kind of 30% of it; 70% of Yungblud is a movement and a mindset, being like, ‘I don’t want to face this alone,’ and it’s a hub for you to come to be like, ‘I’m going through this.’ And then chances are someone in the comment section will be like, ‘Yo, I feel that too. And I felt like I was alone like that.’ And it just became this massive ecosystem of that more so than the music.”
