Eraserheads’ frontman Ely Buendia gives young musicians a free hand to create their own spin on the tracks of one of the band’s most successful albums

MANILA, Philippines – Eraserheads’ iconic Cutterpillow album from 1995 gets a new and modern look, thanks to some young and up-and-coming acts in the OPM scene.

Offshore Music, the indie label owned by Eraserheads’ frontman Ely Buendia, released a tribute to the album, reimagining its tracks through modern takes from rising OPM acts.

The reimagined album is bannered by Pinkmen’s harmony-rich version of “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” one of the band’s greatest hits.

The tribute also included Diego’s Scenes and Ligaya Escueta’s emo-charged take on “Back2Me,” Elton Clark’s synth-pop spin on “Torpedo,” Carousel Casualties’ rendition of “Walang Nagbago,” on top of other genre-defying takes.

According to Offshore Music CEO Buendia, the artists were given free rein to create their own spin on the tracks in the album.

“We didn’t set any parameters,” he said. “We just told the artists that it was a tribute album, and they can interpret it as they see fit. Some totally changed the feel, genre, and energy of the song, and some stayed faithful to the material but added some sprinkles of their own musicality in it.”

“The balance just came naturally. The decision is left to the artists, and we trust that they have the taste and wisdom to determine whether they are enhancing the original song or giving it some sort of a sonic makeover that appeals to a specific generation of listeners,” Buendia added.

The tribute also saw the performances of JUICEBOX’s fun-filled take on “Overdrive,” Pixie Labrador’s Lilith Fair-flavored style “Fill Her,” ALYSON’s slick city pop render of “Huwag Mo Nang Itanong,” ena mori’s theatrical reworking of the title track “Cutterpillow, and Amateurish and Stef Aranas’ dynamic redo of “Superproxy.”

Additionally, it features “Waiting for the Bus” by MIMI and Eliza Marie, “Fine Time” by Sansette, “Kama Supra” by Seedy and the Years, “Slo Mo” by GundamFunk, “Paru-Parong Ningning” by Her Name is Noelle, “Poorman’s Grave” by Grave Aviators, and “Yoko’ by neytan.

The label also released a reprised track for “Overdrive.”

All the old hits are now out on all digital music platforms worldwide via Offshore Music and Sony Music Entertainment.

On top of the album, Offshore Music also plans to release the behind-the-scenes of the recording sessions of the tribute tracks on YouTube starting June 6.

Cutterpillow was Eraserheads’ third studio album, and has since been regarded as one of its most successful ones in the band’s long history.

The legendary group, composed of Buendia, Marcus Adoro, Raimund Marasigan, and Buddy Zabala, was set for a reunion show at the Eraserheads’ Electric Fun Festival on May 31, but the event was rescheduled for October 18. – Rappler.com
