Creed and Nickelback are two of the most polarizing rock bands to ever exist. While both acts have sold millions of albums, they’ve also been on the receiving end of much criticism and backlash over the years. Despite the haters, they can count one super-fan in R&B star SZA.
Variety just named SZA its “Hitmaker of the Year,” and in the accompanying interview, she was asked what music she’s been listening to that she really loves.
SZA responded, “The other day, you know what I pulled up? Creed, Nickelback, Train ‘Drops of Jupiter,’ just a whole bunch of that.” That apparently led the interviewer to do a facepalm and burst out laughing, leading SZA to react, “I know, I know! Wait, you know what’s crazy? Do white people hate Creed and Nickelback?”
The singer continued, “Black people love them! They rock! That shit is bomb! Why do you all hate it so much? … I like Creed so much — ‘Higher’? Why are you hating on it? Have you ever felt more inspired and uplifted in your life? I’m in the car and I’m blasting ‘Higher,’ I feel like it’s a gospel song, the vocals are going crazy and it’s also somehow slightly romantic, it just feels so fun. Because even if it’s cliche, he’s so fucking dead ass!”
SZA concluded, “I will be a Creed fan forever. Like, it started just on a whim in the shower, ‘Oh, let’s play this,’ and then it became a week of Creed and Nickelback.”
Thanks to fans like SZA, Creed and Nickelback are doing just fine. Creed recently announced a massive 2024 reunion tour that will see singer Scott Stapp and company playing their first shows in more than 10 years. Tickets are available here.
Nickelback, meanwhile, completed an extensive North American outing in October, and will embark on a UK/European tour in 2024. Tickets for those shows are available here.
And you can also catch SZA at the upcoming Jingle Ball concerts in New York City and Boston. Pick up tickets here.
