Vince Clarke joins Kyle Meredith to talk Songs of Silence, his first-ever solo album. Taking inspiration from a variety of unlikely sources, the record finds the Erasure (and Depeche Mode, and Yaz) legend pointing towards drone and ambient music.
The synth-pop artist discusses how the record came to be almost accidentally, taking inspiration from Blade Runner 2049, and why ambient music is having a real moment right now. Clarke goes on to discuss how music videos give songs another dimension, adapting an old union folk song, and his desire to work with Phillip Glass. He also reveals details for the next Erasure album.
“Even before I started [Songs of Silence], I was working on some demos and ideas for the next Erasure record,” he teases. “I think Andy and I will be getting together at the begging of early next year.”
