VASSY Nabs 2023 EDMA Icon Award: "Ladies, Women Can Too Be Icons in Dance"

Accepting the hardware live at the Fontainebleau in Miami, VASSY became the first woman to win the coveted EDMA Icon Award.

Miami Music Week 2023 has come and gone, but the star of VASSY‘s legacy is only growing brighter.

The renowned artist, who is the mind behind a slew of generational dance anthems from the past decade, has won the Icon Award at this year’s EDMAs. After years of influential work paving a path for women in the scene, VASSY is the first to take home the award.

“I came to this country from a small town in Australia called Darwin, from a humble, hard-working Greek family with a dream to pursue my passion,” VASSY tells EDM.com. “I worked hard with integrity—it was not easy as it is a DJ-driven boys club genre, but I stayed true to myself and the dance community at radio really embraced me and gave me the platform to be myself and share my art with the world. I’m beyond grateful and proud to say that being authentically myself through out my career payed off. Ladies, women can too be icons in dance.”

It’s a well-deserved triumph for a bona fide music vanguard. Thanks to her stentorian voice, VASSY has long been one of the most revered singer-songwriters in the dance music space. She’s also one of its most coveted collaborators, having worked with Tiësto, Afrojack and many other high-profile producers.

But in a career full of hits, 2014’s “BAD” is perhaps her most timeless. The big room house anthem, a collaboration with David Guetta and Showtek, recently eclipsed two billion streams as it continues to reverberate through the festival circuit.

“It’s such an honor to receive the EDMA ICON Award,” VASSY added. “To be recognized for my art and contribution to the dance community by my industry and the fans in the dance space is such a rewarding moment and monumental career highlight. I thank everyone at Dance Radio across the U.S. who have supported my music for years.”

Hosted by executive producer Sean “Hollywood” Hamilton in partnership with EDM.com, the 2023 EDMAs took over the lavish Fontainebleau Miami Beach, where an invite-only ceremony revealed this year’s award winners on March 24th.
