NYC-based trans rock band Um, Jennifer? returns with their latest single, ‘Delancey,’ an electrifying glimpse into their upcoming debut album, Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, set for release on April 25, 2025, via Final Girl Records.
A dynamic blend of vulnerability and energy, Delancey reflects on the anxieties of unrequited love through a whirlwind of punchy guitars and infectious melodies. Written from two perspectives at once—both disappointment in someone and the fear of being a disappointment—the song unravels the spiraling emotions that come with uncertain affection. The track’s upbeat nature contrasts its introspective lyrics, embodying the humor and heartbreak of love’s unpredictability. Produced by Ariel Loh, ‘Delancey’ maintains the band’s rawness while elevating their sound with polished, yet deeply expressive, production.
“‘Delancey’ is written from two perspectives at once – your own disappointment with the one you love, and from the fear that they’re disappointed in you too. It’s speaking aloud the anxious spiral that unrequited love creates. “Do you think I talk too much?” becomes “You talk way too much.” “I wish you would tell me what you’re thinking” becomes “I don’t think you’ll get it.”
He continues:
“It’s impossible to tell which lyric is which, but I did really think I saw you walking on Delancey. And I do really want to know if you want me, baby. Musically, it’s a surprisingly upbeat song. Maybe because it’s funny to be in love and to be scared about it. Or maybe it’s because if we don’t laugh about it all, we’ll cry.”
Accompanying the release is a music video, directed by Scarpati, which captures the emotional dissonance of the song. Filmed in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and East Village, the video portrays a morning walk home after a night out, filled with wistful longing and the hope of running into someone just to pretend not to care.
‘Delancey’ is out now on your favorite DSP.
