Toronto-based artist Meg Remy, the creative force behind U.S. Girls, returns with the sprawling 12-minute single ‘Bookends,’ the lead release from her upcoming album Scratch It, out June 20, 2025, via Royal Mountain Records and 4AD.
‘Bookends’ serves as the emotional and conceptual core of Scratch It, co-written with Edwin de Goeji and paying tribute to Remy’s late friend, Power Trip frontman Riley Gale. Drawing thematic inspiration from John Carey’s Eyewitness To History, the track explores death as the great equalizer—woven through Remy’s introspective lens. The ballad’s scope is matched by a cinematic short film directed by Caity Arthur, which subverts the idea of death as void, instead presenting it as a euphoric and surreal transition through shifting pop iconography and magical realism.
They explain:
“The video is ultimately about death and absolution — how death is one of the only certain things in life; the ‘great equalizer,’ nolens volens. However, it also subverts the traditional narrative of death as a despairing void, rather, portraying it as a euphoric transitory experience or new beginning through a hallucinatory ensemble cast, a 1960s pop-star performance, and sleight of hand magic. As the video progresses, the TV channels alternate through these scenes as Meg’s lyrics evoke death in its various forms.”
Recorded live in Nashville with minimal overdubs, Scratch It is the result of instinct-driven collaboration and genre fluidity, blending gospel, country, disco, folk, and garage rock. The album will be available digitally and physically, including a screen-printed test pressing exclusively on Bandcamp.
‘Bookends’ offers a powerful entry into this new era for U.S. Girls, channeling personal loss and historical reflection into one of Remy’s most ambitious works to date.
