Tomorrowland 2024 Morphs Into Requiem for Avicii With Heartfelt DJ Tributes

Time may have claimed Avicii, but his music continues to move millions.

The late EDM icon’s music echoed through the fields of Tomorrowland over the weekend as a slew of DJs, united by respect and admiration, weaved his timeless tracks into their sets.

Prior to this year’s festival, Avicii’s “Levels” had been named the best anthem in Tomorrowland’s history after claiming the most fan votes in its “Tomorrowland Top 1000” poll. Naturally, the fest morphed into a bittersweet symphony for Avicii, whose generational dance anthem found new life at the hands of Hardwell, Afrojack and many more over the course of its three days.

Some, like the Dutch dance music superstar Oliver Heldens, even burst into tears onstage.

“Maybe it’s also the lack of sleep and the heat, but the moment that the iconic ‘Levels’ melody first hit, I just couldn’t hold back the tears,” Heldens writes. “It’s been more than 6 years now that we lost Tim, but I know he’ll live on in so many of our hearts.”

Elsewhere at Tomorrowland, Hardwell paid homage to Avicii in a rare EDM throwback set, playing “Levels” for a crowd we’re willing to bet also shed more than a few tears.

“If we’re gonna do a throwback set, there’s only one record—one f***ing record,” an emotional Hardwell said before dropping the track.

Afrojack performed a medley of Avicii’s songs on Tomorrowland’s Mainstage, playing “Levels,” “A Sky Full of Stars,” “Wake Me Up” and “Fade Into Darkness” under the sun.

3 Are Legend, the EDM supergroup of Steve Aoki and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, interpolated Aloe Blacc’s vocals from Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” into an electrifying mashup, leading to a particularly poignant singalong moment.

The same goes for Brazilian dance music superstar Alok, who threaded the “Wake Me Up” acapella into a mashup comprising Otto Knows’ “Million Voices,” Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child” and Alesso and Sebastian Ingrosso’s “Calling (Lose My Mind).”
