The Smile have released a brand new song called “Don’t Get Me Started,” alongside an accompanying music video directed by audiovisual artist Weirdcore.
“Don’t Get Me Started” was originally premiered live in concert during a string of shows earlier this year. Last week, The Smile released the song alongside another new track called “The Slip” on 12-inch vinyl exclusively in independent record stores. Now, “Don’t Get Me Started” is available to stream globally online.
Crafted by the visual artist Weirdcore, known for their collaborations with Aphex Twin, Radiohead, and The Caretaker, the video features a continuously transforming environment that shifts, stutters, mutates, and collapses. Color emerges and is quickly reverted back to black and white; pyramids, vague cityscapes, suited characters, and industrial backdrops appear often before a new environmental element creates a new scene altogether. The song’s haunting bridge is paired with colorful animations, elaborate landscapes, and religious imagery — all before flooding back to the original black and white, city-based mutations that the video began with. The Smile, comprised of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner, returned in January to release their excellent second album, Wall of Eyes. They previously tapped Paul Thomas Anderson to direct the visual for second single “Friend of a Friend.” They were set to tour Europe this month in support of the album, but had to cancel in July due to Jonny Greenwood’s recovery from a serious illness.
