Metal, as an adjective, isn’t something you can just apply to music. It’s a whole state of mind, and one that numerous filmmakers over the years have brought to the screen. Hence, this celebration of 13 movies that blew our minds with their ability to challenge, enthrall, and excite us — like the best heavy metal does.
While we discussed expanding this list’s scope to include documentaries like Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and Anvil: The Story of Anvil, that almost felt like cheating — it’s easy to say something’s metal if it’s just footage of a heavy metal band in action. Now, if the heavy metal band was descending into Hell, or literally infusing its entire body with metal… That’d be a very different story.

Additionally, we also chose not to rank this list, instead arranging it chronologically, because it’s not hard to decide whether or not something is metal — really, you know it when you see it. However, deciding what movies might be more metal than others became far too subjective a question. What we can guarantee is that while the below represents a lot of genres, from animation to comedy to epic fantasy to horror. And all of it is face-melting cinema.
