A woman who landed a job with Spotify thanks to her Spotify-themed resume has been laid off by Spotify.
Emily Vu posted a screenshot of her Spotify-themed resume in 2021. But a few days ago, she revealed she was part of the recent layoffs announced by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek. In April 2022, after a Spotify employee encouraged her to apply, Vu was hired as a Product Manager intern for the music streaming service. Five months later, she was promoted to associate Product Manager.
“Thank you to everyone who has followed my journey—I couldn’t have done it without y’all. Seriously. I love the internet,” Vu tweeted about her successfully landing a job with Spotify thanks to her viral resume.
On January 24, 2023 Vu announced she was laid off from Spotify in a similar manner. “I’m heartbroken that my time at Spotify was cut so short, but I’m excited to start this new chapter of my career,” Vu told the world. She also added that she was looking for opportunities in the field.
Spotify announced on Monday that it is reducing its staff by 6% or about 600 employees from its workforce of 9,800. An internal note sent to employees from Daniel Ek also revealed that Dawn Ostroff, Head of Content and Advertising, would be departing the company. “In hindsight, I was too ambitious in investing ahead of our revenue growth,” Ek said of the layoffs and why they were necessary.
Spotify, Google, Meta, and many other big tech companies are making staff reductions following explosive growth during the pandemic. Spotify appears to be trimming the fat from its podcast division, where 38 podcast employees saw cuts at the beginning of October across its Gimlet and Parcast studios. As part of the layoffs, Spotify has also implemented an immediate hiring freeze and has removed all positions apart from internships across its job offerings.
