Sister Ray, the musical persona of Ella Coyes, has returned with a spellbinding new single, ‘Magic.’
Following the release of the title track last month, ‘Magic’ is the second single from Coyes’ sophomore album, Believer, set to drop on April 4th via Royal Mountain Records. Hailing from the Alberta prairies of Sturgeon County and now calling Toronto home, Coyes first captivated listeners with her debut album Communion and the subsequent Teeth EP, earning a Polaris Prize longlist nod in 2022. For ‘Magic,’ she teams up once again with producer Jon Nellen (known for his work with Big Thief and Nick Hakim) and an impressive lineup including Joe Manzoli (ginla), Marc Ribot (Tom Waits), Paul Spring (Fleet Foxes), and Isaiah Barr (Dev Hynes). Recorded in Brooklyn, the track showcases a bold creative shift—crafted in a single day with minimal revisions, it marries expansive arrangements with a raw, unpolished intimacy.
Coyes reflects on the song’s inspiration:
“While writing this record, I became obsessed with capturing what it felt like to look ahead at the future as a child. The older I get, the more distance I feel from the version of life I had imagined back then—the wonder that refused to be contained. There’s a great resilience in childhood that I long for, and an instinctual determination to discover, which I find far more elusive in adulthood. Yet, I believe that if I dared to be so brave then, I must still know that bravery now. ‘Magic’ is both a lullaby for time past and a testament to imagination in the future.”
With ‘Magic,’ Sister Ray casts a spell, offering a glimpse into the emotional depth and sonic ambition of Believer. Fans can stream the single now and anticipate the full album’s arrival next month.
