Shakira seemingly turns out to be dishing a ruthless attack at her ex, Gerard Piqué, in her new song ‘Te Quedo Grande’ or “TQG”. The ‘Waka Waka’ singer pairs up with fellow Colombian artist Karol G in the song, which is a track on Karol G’s full album ‘Mañana Será Bonito’. The song, originally in Spanish, was translated into English by Billboard.
As fans sat up waiting for the release of the new song, they soon realized that the lyrics of Shakira’s part were rife with her personal experiences since her separation from the former Spanish footballer, where she talks blatantly about the failed relationship and how hard it had been for her emotionally. She says in the verses, “Seeing you with the new girl hurt me, but I’m now set on me / I’ve forgotten what we lived together, and that’s what you’re offended by / And even my life got better, you are no longer welcome here / And what your girlfriend slayed at me, that doesn’t anger me, it makes me laugh.” Speaking about Piqué’s allegedly failed attempt to reunite with the singer, she says: “Why are you looking for me if you know that I don’t repeat mistakes?”
However it is nothing new for singers/songwriters to talk about their love life, be it the sparks of first love or being lovelorn, cheated, or jilted in love and the pain, grief, and desire for revenge that comes consequently, in their songs. Singers like Taylor Swift and Adele have also been famous for doing the same in their music. Last month Miley Cyrus released ‘Flowers’ which was supposedly about her relationship and divorce with Liam Hemsworth after news of him cheating on the pop star during their marriage came to the fore.
Shakira and Gerard Piqué started dating after the latter appeared in the official FIFA World Cup anthem of 2010 ‘Waka Waka’, sung by Shakira which also became one of the landmark performances of her career. The couple announced their separation in June 2022 after 11 years of being together when Shakira reportedly caught him cheating.
Shakira opened up about the split while speaking to Elle Magazine, expressing how hard the breakup was on her and the two sons of the former couple, Milan and Sasha. She said that it had been an especially difficult period for them as it was not a regular separation and each one of them was constantly under the eyes of the paparazzi. She further added, “And there’s not a place where I can hide from them with my kids, except for my own house. You know, we can’t take a walk in the park like a regular family or go have an ice cream or do any activity without the paparazzi following us. So it’s hard.”
