Roblox has launched a new licensing platform aimed at transforming how intellectual property (IP) owners and digital creators collaborate and monetize content on its platform.
The newly introduced Roblox License Manager and accompanying licenses catalog seeks to streamline and scale the previously cumbersome process of negotiating IP deals on Roblox. The Roblox License Manager equips rights holders with tools to register and manager their IP, set custom licensing terms, and proactively scan for IP usage. Rights holders can now offer licenses directly to creators, monitor their content, and collect revenue shares automatically.
This self-serve system significantly shortens the licensing process from months to days or even hours, opening new licensing opportunities to a much broader creator base than before. To kick off the new feature, Roblox has lined up several entertainment partners.
- Lionsgate | Offers licenses for franchises including ‘Twilight,’ ‘Saw,’ ‘Divergent,’ and ‘Now You See Me.’
- Netflix | Popular series ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Squid Game’ are not licensable for Roblox’s creator community.
- Sega | Brings the ‘Like A Dragon’ Yakuza video game series to the platform.
- Kodansha | Announces future availability of manga IP like ‘Blue Lock’ and ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime.’
These major IPs are available at launch, with two more expected in the coming weeks. Roblox said it will continue to expand its licenses catalog throughout the year. Roblox hopes to capture 10% of all global gaming content revenue in its ecosystem. The platform is on track to surpass $1 billion in payouts to creators this year.
While the initial focus is on full-experience adaptations, Roblox plans to introduce additional license types and expand access to the License Manager for all IP holders in the coming months. The platform’s leadership believes this “innovative approach to game and interactive media licensing at scale” will create new possibilities for rights holders and creators alike.
