Where does Post Malone go when he’s looking to write a hit song? The crapper, apparently.
The 26-year-old artist shared the information during his debut appearance on The Howard Stern Show this week, where he candidly discussed his unorthodox approach to songwriting.
“Shit literally comes to me because I write all my songs on the can,” he admitted. “I’d say about 30 percent of all my albums have been written on the shitter. And I’d say 60 percent of lyrics have been written on the shitter.”
Malone then asked Howard to share the average time he spends on the toilet. The host said he tries to keep it under 2 minutes, which is significantly less than Malone’s average time.
“I’m like hour and a half, two hours,” the artist said. “I have a notepad. So it’s not the iPhone notes or the iTunes notes or whatever it is. I have a special notepad off to the side where I can write my shit. It’s a digital journal […] It’s my special zone, ’cause no one wants to come talk to you while you’re taking a shit. No one. I don’t care who it is.
Posty wouldn’t say whether he’s “pushing” throughout his lengthy songwriting process or was simply sitting on the toilet so he wouldn’t be disturbed. Howard then warned the artist about extended periods on the toilet, as it could result in hemorrhoids. Malone didn’t seem too concerned.
“Does your fiancée ever say, ‘Listen, Post. I love you, but for Christ’s sake, you’re disappearing for two hours on the can. Now you gotta get out and you gotta mingle a little bit,’” Howard said. “It’s too much of a hideaway.”
“I wouldn’t say it’s a hideaway as much as it’s an oasis,” Malone explained.

The project, which debuted at No. 2, includes guest appearances by Doja Cat, Fleet Foxes, the Weeknd, and Roddy Ricch, who will also join Malone’s North American tour.
