Our recurring feature series Track by Track sees artists guiding readers through each song on their new release. Today, the illustriously named UK heavy psych act Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs break down their new full-length, Death Hilarious.
There’s something darkly surrealistic about Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, from the UK act’s bizarre name down through the murky, atmospheric riffs that make up the core of their music. Their brand of acidic stoner rock isn’t so much for bong loads as it is for contemplating the end of the world.
Much of that comes down to the lyrical content of frontman Matt Baty, which falls somewhere between the camp of the Melvins and the socio-political commentary of contemporaries Chat Pile. He drops cold reality and grim assessments, and it adds a sinister edge to the Pigs’ sonic concoction. Even Run the Jewels rapper El-P was hip to it, unleashing a potent verse of dystopian observations on the collaborative track and album highlight “Glib Tongued,” no doubt provoked by Baty’s thematic strand.
Metal and psych heads crave a band that keeps an air of mystery, and Pigs x7 — SEO-unfriendly name and all — have certainly done that. So it’s with great pleasure that we present this exclusive track-by-track breakdown of Death Hilarious with Baty and guitarist Sam Grant, who take us through the album’s inner workings. Stream the full album and see their commentary below.
“Blockage”
Sam Grant: “Blockage” is a bolt of lightning. It’s the shortest and most direct track from the record; a shot in the arm to herald a new record.
Matt Baty: One hell of a work out. Fast out the blocks. Excellent for improving your cardio.
