Drag performers have long looked towards pop megastars for inspiration; since the dawn of the lip-sync, the exaggerated emotionality of parodying female singers was always a perfect fit. For drag superstar Peppermint, it was Janet Jackson that drew her attention, particularly on the eponymous album janet.
On this episode of The Spark Parade, Peppermint dives into how janet. represents a major step forward for Jackson as an artist and why it still has such a personal impact on her all these years later. She also discusses Jackson’s public advocacy for the queer community, as well as time the artist almost ran her over after a show.
“My mom took me to the Janet concert… and we went out into the parking lot, and I run out into [the lot], and all of a sudden, a tour bus comes up and nearly hits me,” she recalls. “And the curtain opens and somebody sticks their head out — it’s Janet.”
“She opened the door and started signing autographs.” she continues. “I was the first person she waved at, ’cause she almost hit me.”
