Despite hearing loss, legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon is embarking on a spring and summer US tour, ‘A Quiet Celebration.’
Paul Simon will present live debut performances of his 2023 album, Seven Psalms, as well as a celebration of his timeless classic hits. Due to his hearing loss, Simon will perform in intimate venues where the acoustics are optimal for his condition.
During the recording of Seven Psalms, Simon discovered (and later revealed during the “Restless Dreams” documentary) that he was steadily losing his hearing in his left ear. This initially made extended live performances impossible, and Simon resigned himself to no longer touring. But with the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss, along with his own production team, Simon has redesigned his stage set up to make his performances viable.
Inspired to perform again, Simon has been hard at work rehearsing and figuring out the logistics of bringing Seven Psalms to the stage alongside new arrangements of familiar hits. The album was recorded on entirely acoustic instruments and performed predominantly by Simon himself, transcending the concept album and being released as one piece of continuous music in seven movements.
“A Quiet Celebration” will begin on April 4 in New Orleans, with stops across North America, concluding in Seattle in August. All shows go on sale Friday, February 21, at 10 AM local time.
His touring band will include Caleb Burhans (viola), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Gyan Riley (guitar), Mick Rossi (piano, keys), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Nancy Stagnita (flute), Mark Stewart (guitar), and Eugene Friesen (cello). Steve Gadd and Matt Chamberlin will alternate on drums.
