Ozzy Osbourne on Seeing This Is Spinal Tap: I "Wasn't Laughing"

Ozzy Osbourne once admitted that he didn’t laugh at the hysterical mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap because it hit too close to home. In fact, the Prince of Darkness thought it was a real documentary.

During an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien back in the day, Conan asked Ozzy about his reaction to seeing This Is Spinal Tap for the first time. The metal legend responded, “Funny thing about Spinal Tap, when I went to see it I was the only person in the audience that wasn’t laughing because it was really like a documentary to me. Those things actually happened [to me].”

The rock icon went on to say that he had gotten lost on his way to stage multiple times, just like the famous “Hello, Cleveland” scene in the 1984 movie. He also admitted that some of it was his own doing, as he would jokingly switch the arrows around on the gaffer tape pointing to the stage, ultimately confusing himself and his band.

Sadly, Ozzy passed away earlier this week at the age of 76, with Spinal Tap honoring him by sharing an “Ozzy Forever” graphic with the caption, “There are no amps loud enough to honor this rock legend.” Just yesterday, a trailer premiered for the long awaited sequel Spinal Tap II, set to hit theaters September 12th.

A new 4K Ultra HD restoration of This Is Spinal Tap is out now on Prime Video and Apple TV, with a physical release following on September 16th (pre-order here). A new behind-the-scenes book on the making of the original film is also set for release in September.
