Original Sphere Team Planning Smaller Capacity Mini-Spheres

The team behind the Las Vegas Sphere is currently working on a scaled-down version of the venue, which would offer concertgoers a similar experience at a fraction of the construction and production costs.

According to a report from AV Magazine, Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan told analysts on a recent investment call that they were working on designs for “mini-Spheres” with a capacity of roughly 5,000 people. For comparison, the Vegas Sphere can hold up to 20,000 with standing capacity.

Besides costing far less than the $2.3 billion of the original, these smaller versions of the Sphere could attract a wider range of artists due to lesser production costs on their end and reduced attendance requirements. Concert films similar to V-U2 could also be shown at these new locations, since they would still offer the giant wraparound screens and immersive experiences of the Las Vegas venue.

The original has hosted dazzling stage productions from the likes of U2, Dead & Company, Phish, and The Eagles. Upcoming residences for Kenny Chesney and Backstreet Boys have also been announced.

Last fall, Sphere Entertainment Co. announced a second venue opening in Abu Dhabi after plans to launch a London location were nixed by the city’s mayor.
