No new Nicki Minaj-Cardi B song, promo image is AI-generated

Results from image detection tools show that the poster was highly likely generated by AI. The two rappers have also not announced any collaboration.

Claim: Rappers Nicki Minaj and Cardi B released a single titled “Mami” on November 22, 2024.

Rating: FALSE

Why we fact-checked this: The claim was made in a post by a verified Facebook page named “Papi” on November 17. The page has over 4.1 million followers and claims to be a Mexico-based “news and media website” in its bio.

The post’s caption says in Spanish: “Nobody saw it coming: Nicki Minaj announces her new single, Mami,’ with Cardi B for this Friday,” referring to a November 22 release date. It also includes an image of the two singers posing on a jet ski.

As of writing, the post has garnered over 153,000 reactions, 5,200 comments, and 35,000 shares.

The facts: The promotional image teasing the supposed new song is fake, based on analyses by artificial intelligence (AI) image detection tools.

Sightengine flagged the poster as likely to be AI-generated with a 99% probability and a 69% likelihood of potential face manipulation. Analysis by AI detector tool Is it AI? showed the image was “highly likely” generated by AI with a probability score of 80%.

TrueMedia.org’s analysis also revealed “substantial evidence” that the image was manipulated due to visual elements with an “artificial appearance.”

“The styling and posing of the figures seem too perfect and symmetrical, which is often a sign of image editing…It’s likely that this is a promotional or fan-made edit rather than a real photograph,” the analysis said.

The photo used in the promotional image is likely sourced from apparel website vuitino.com.

Song releases: Contrary to the claim, no song featuring the two rappers was released last November 22. A look at the two rappers’ social media platforms — on Facebook, Instagram, and X — shows no post about the supposed song or any upcoming collaborations.

The last song in which both artists were featured was Migos’ “MotorSport” back in 2017.

Minaj and Cardi B have had a years-long feud dating back to 2017, with tensions between the two heating up in an apparent altercation during the Harper’s Bazaar Icon Party at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. Videos circulated online showing Cardi B allegedly lunging at Minaj during the event. – Cris Fernan Bayaga/Rappler.com
