NewJeans has broken a Guinness World Record to become the fastest Kpop act to reach one billion streams on Spotify.
Guinness World Records confirmed the record on March 8, 2023. The group featuring Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein reached one billion streams on Spotify in 219 days—faster than any other Kpop act. That includes solo male, solo female, or group acts. The Kpop act had just six songs available on the platform to achieve the record.
The include the four-track debut EP NewJeans, which released on August 1, 2022 and the singles “Ditto” and “OMG.”
NewJeans shattered BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s Kpop all-comers’ record of 411 days from October 26, 2022. The solo artist record was broken by Jung Kook of BTS fame with 409 days on March 27, 2023. But NewJeans has managed to come out on top thanks to the massive success of its relatively small catalog of songs.
“Ditto” (313.2M streams) and “OMG” (312.4M) were neck-and-neck to be named as the most streamed song on Spotify for the group as of May 4, 2012. The group just released their latest single “Zero” (18.07M) streams as of May 4, 2023, which will undoubtedly add to their impressive streaming debut.
NewJeans is performing at Lollapalooza this year after J-Hope’s solo performance at last year’s festival. NewJeans says it is looking to release new music for fans this summer as the group just finished recording a new album that will debut soon.
“I wanted to break the stereotype that only certain styles of music would be able to succeed in the so-called mainstream industry,” Min Hee Jin, CEO of NewJeans’ label ADOR told Billboard in April 2023. “In the albums going forward, NewJeans will continue to strive to present something new and unique to exceed the expectations of their fans. NewJeans members keep growing and growing, and we can’t wait to surprise the world again.”
