Netflix's First K-pop Group Gets M Countdown Stage and Tops Music Chart with K-drama Song - Without Even Being Real

Heard of HI-BOYZ yet? They are a fictional K-pop boy group with three members, but they are already making real waves. The group includes Um Jay, Soobin, and Top Key, and they just made it onto South Korea’s Melon chart. Their song ‘When the Day Comes’ played in the popular K-drama Resident Playbook, and fans instantly took notice. It debuted at #79 on the Melon Top 100. HI-BOYZ also made their first stage appearance on M Countdown, even though they technically do not exist outside of the show.

So, who are the faces behind these characters? One is Kang You Seok, who plays a first-year resident in Resident Playbook. The other two are TXT members, Soobin and Yeonjun. The two made a surprise cameo in episode 9 and performed the group’s original track. With catchy music and familiar idols playing fictional stars, HI-BOYZ might be fake, but their success definitely is not!

HI-BOYZ from Resident Playbook set for M Countdown stage:

TXT members Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and HueningKai released a new summer track titled ‘When the Day Comes’. The song is part of the official soundtrack for Resident Playbook. This is a spin-off of the popular medical drama Hospital Playlist, starring Go Youn Jung and Jung Jun Won. While the full version of the song features vocals from all five TXT members, only Yeonjun and Soobin appeared in the drama. They played fictional idols from the group HI-BOYZ.

The track plays during a scene that introduces a budding romance between characters Um Jae Il and Kim Sa Bi. Fans quickly responded to the moment and the music. The performance video entered the Melon chart at #50 on May 12. According to Nate Pann, it also hit #21 on Genie, #17 on Bugs, and #92 on Flo.

With the rising popularity of the track and the group, producers have now decided to bring HI-BOYZ to life. According to the Soompi outlet, the fictional group will soon debut as part of Mnet’s music show lineup. This means fans will get to see more of HI-BOYZ beyond the drama. This time it will be on the actual stage. The line between fiction and reality just got a little thinner!!!

A representative from M Countdown has confirmed that HI-BOYZ from Resident Playbook will appear on the show. “It’s true that HI-BOYZ will be appearing,” they said, adding that the group is set to perform on the May 22 broadcast. Though fictional, the group has a detailed backstory. According to their mock profile, they debuted on February 4, 2011. However, the group officially disbanded on December 28, 2013. Their fandom is called “Hi Girls” and fans even have a chant -“Hi~ Hello Girls!” HI-BOYZ also has official group colors: Sky Blue and Vanilla Cream. Their style is described as upbeat K-pop from the early 2010s, blending retro energy with emotional warmth. The fictional agency behind them is Stone Entertainment.

Despite being created for a drama, the level of detail around the group has helped them connect with fans. With a real stage appearance coming up, HI-BOYZ are stepping beyond fiction.

When is Resident Playbook’s finale?

The final two episodes of the Netflix K-drama Resident Playbook will air on May 17 and 18. The show is labeled as a limited series, so it will not return for a second season. Set in Yulje Medical Center’s Jongno branch, the story centers on four first-year residents: Oh Yi Young, Kim Sa Bi, Um Jae Il, and Pyo Nam Kyun. Each of them has a unique personality, and the drama follows their journey as they adjust to life in the OB-GYN department. Throughout the series, the residents deal with everyday struggles. They question whether they should continue, build unexpected friendships, and even fall in love. The show has been praised for its emotional depth and realistic portrayal of hospital life.

One of its strongest points is how it highlights the unseen side of working in OB-GYN. Viewers appreciated how it tackled the emotional and physical toll doctors face in their careers, especially during a time when South Korea is experiencing a drop in birth rates. Resident Playbook has mixed heartfelt moments with real-life issues, helping the drama stand out. Though it is ending soon, the show left a strong impression as it focused on both the personal and professional growth of young doctors.

Like the original Hospital Playlist drama, the spinoff also kept that musical spirit alive by introducing a fictional boy band. This is not the first time a made-up group has gained so much attention. Previously, Byeon Woo Seok’s Lovely Runner also introduced a fictional band called Eclipse, and their soundtrack quickly became a hit overnight.
