Neil Young & the Chrome Hearts are hitting the road this year—but they’re not embracing Ticketmaster’s platinum ticketing. Young cites Robert Smith’s efforts to keep The Cure ticket prices and service fees low for its 2023 tour.
Posting on his Neil Young Archives site, the legendary folk-rock singer called dynamic pricing “the story of the bad thing that has happened to concerts world-wide.” Young says seeing Robert Smith’s efforts to abandon dynamic pricing helped him realize “I have a choice to make and can make a difference for my music loving friends.”
“My management and agent have always tried to cover my back on the road, getting me the best deals they could,” Young continues. “They have tried to protect me and the fans from scalpers who buy the best tickets and resell them at huge increases for their own profits.”
“Ticketmaster’s high-priced Platinum tickets were introduced to the areas where scalpers were buying the most tickets for resale. The money went to me. That did not feel right. Very soon, Platinum tickets will no longer be available for my shows. I have decided to let the people work this out. Buy aggressively when the tickets come out or tickets will cost a lot more in a secondary market.”
Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing is aimed at preventing scalpers from making a killing on secondary ticket sales by redirecting the money to artists and their tour. Young announced a new tour this year, with dates starting in June in Europe before touring across the United States throughout the summer.
