Vancouver’s cult shoegazers Movieland are back with the release of their single ‘(A Sort Of) Icarus,’ a shimmering gem from their upcoming archival collection Then & Now, set to release on December 13th, 2024.
‘(A Sort Of) Icarus’ captures Movieland’s quintessential blend of moody melodies, introspective lyrics, and psychedelic soundscapes. A standout from their formative years in the 1990s, the track reflects on themes of ambition and fragility, drawing inspiration from its titular myth. With its layered guitars and atmospheric drone, the song channels the restless creativity of an era that shaped Vancouver’s underground music scene.
Songwriter Alan D. Boyd recalls the song’s genesis:
“The song came at a time when we were living in a huge house in Shaughnessy and exploring early Vancouver raves. A friend had written an epic poem about (A Sort Of) Icarus, and we read it one night after returning from a club—still aglow. I was also really into the Boo Radleys at that time and loving their song ‘Lazarus.’ So it grew out of them both. Very much the time and place.”
Accompanied by a dreamlike, seven-and-a-half-minute video rich in psychedelic imagery, ‘(A Sort Of) Icarus’ feels both nostalgic and timeless. This single leads the charge for Then & Now, a collection of demos and unreleased tracks that promises to rekindle Movieland’s connection with old fans while captivating new listeners.
