Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy join Kyle Meredith to discuss the ins and outs of covering R.E.M.’s 1983 debut, Murmur, for a February tour.
The three talk about what inspired the project and how finding R.E.M.’s album Document when they were younger guided them in their youth. “I guess one of my favorite pass-times [in high school] was kind of shuffling around listening to my CD Walkman player,” Shannon says. “And half the time probably it was an R.E.M. CD in there. It wasn’t like music you would play at the kegger; it was a solitary thing. I found it comforting.”
Shannon speaks to the challenges of deciphering Michael Stipe’s lyrics, while Narducy jokes about Peter Buck’s more difficult guitar parts. The pair also express that they plan on playing more than just R.E.M.’s debut, with the follow-up sophomore LP, Reckoning, getting a spotlight as well. Shannon also touches on doing another album with his band Corporal.
