Two for the Road is a series in which two artists touring together chat about playing shows, life backstage, and more. The latest installment of the series features Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne chatting with Napalm Death singer Barney Greenway.
Melvins and Napalm Death are hitting the road together for an extensive co-headlining Spring 2025 US tour, kicking off this Friday (April 4th) in San Diego, and running through June 7th in Berkeley, California. The outing is dubbed “Savage Imperial Death March Part II,” as it reprises the veteran bands’ 2016 joint tour.
Ahead of the tour, Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne caught up with Napalm Death singer Barney Greenway for Consequence‘s Two for the Road series, and the two shared memories of their previous outing together, expectations for this new tour, the staying power of their respective bands, the financial hurdles music acts face today on the road, and a couple of real-life Spinal Tap moments that happened to each of them
With Napalm Death and Melvins each going strong for roughly 40 years, both Greenway and Osborne expressed gratitude in being able to continue to make music and tour for a living.
“Napalm is so cacophonous, it’s so noisy,” said Greenway. “Yet, it stood the test of nearly four decades now. People still support the band. It could be the other way. It could be like, ‘Enough of that, already!’ And there [would be] no basis for us to go out and do extensive tours. So, I’m thankful. I don’t take it for granted, that’s for sure.”
Osborne added, “I have never taken it for granted, I’ve always felt blessed, and I’ve always tried to serve it as best I could. Take it to the people, make records. That’s what I do. People are like, ‘Why do you make so many records?’ And it’s like, ‘This is what I do!’”
He continued, “I put as much effort into this, if not more, than anyone would for any kind of career, whether it’s doctors, lawyers. I’ve sacrificed a lot of my life because I’m so interested in making this work.”
