Lizzo’s “Special” just received another big boost.
Days after performing the single at the 2023 Grammy Awards, the Houston superstar gifted fans with its official remix featuring SZA. The pair confirmed the collaboration on social media this week, sharing a graphic that highlighted their Grammy wins.
“Special” served as the title track off Lizzo’s fourth studio album, which arrived last July. The project earned the artist a handful of Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album; it ultimately earned her the Record of the Year award for lead single “About Damn Time.”
The “Special” remix came more than a year after SZA revealed she and Lizzo had about five joint tracks in the vault. However, she didn’t confirm when—if ever—they would see the light of day.
Lizzo praised SZA in a Time 100 essay last year, recalling the first time she met the TDE songstress in Minneapolis.
“Throughout the experience, she was just so kind and so cool. After that, I literally watched her blow up,” Lizzo wrote. “When she dropped CTRL, her debut studio album, it was a cultural fucking reset. She changed the world! The authenticity in her craft—the way she’s able to tell her story and the way she uses melody—is extraordinary. No one can replicate that. When she’s onstage, she’s timeless. She’s someone who’s the real deal, and I think that she’s well on her way to being regarded as one of the greatest songwriters and singers of all time. All she needs is that pen and that voice and her story, and she’s going to be with us for a long time.”
