Japanese Breakfast Announces New Album and 2025 Tour

Japanese Breakfast, the indie rock project of Michelle Zauner, has announced a brand new album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), arriving March 21st via Dead Oceans. As a first taste, the singer-songwriter has shared the lead single “Orlando in Love” (stream it below). She’s also announced an accompanying tour that is set to go down later this year.

Produced by Blake Mills, who has worked with such names as Bob Dylan and Fiona Apple, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad womensees Japanese Breakfast embrace the studio for the first time. While previous projects found Zauner recording in makeshift and unconventional environments, she tracked the new set of songs at Sound City in Los Angles.

The new studio setting results in Japanese Breakfast coming through with lush, romantic music that’s underlined with a touch of — you guessed it — melancholy. Zauner cites the aftermath of the unexpected success of her 2021 album Jubilee and her memoir Crying In H Mart as a primary thematic inspiration. Turning inward, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad womenshowcases a more contemplative and cautious Japanese Breakfast.

“I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” Zauner said in a statement. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.”

In addition to the album announcement, Japanese Breakfast also unveiled plans for their 2025 tour. The run kicks off with an appearance at Coachella 2025 before making its way across the country. Tickets for all of the new tour dates are available via Ticketmaster.

“Orlando in Love” arrives as the first preview of Japanese Breakfast’s new era. Fittingly, the song is gorgeously orchestrated with lyrics that take inspiration from an unfinished Renaissance epic. Watch the lyric video below.
