‘Every album we write sort of encapsulates the last couple of years we’ve had,’ Andy of HONNE tells Rappler
MANILA, Philippines – James Hatcher and Andy Clutterbuck became each other’s first friends at university and, not long after, began writing music together. It was only in 2014, though, when they officially began releasing their creations as the English electro-pop duo we now know as HONNE.
They were both in their mid-20s then and, year by year, had put out hit after hit. Think “Warm on a Cold Night,” “Good Together,” “Location Unknown,” and, of course, “Day 1,” among many others.
You’ll always get a glimpse of the duo’s thoughts and own stories in the songs they write, the experience of listening to it akin to witnessing the phases in HONNE’s lives. Even so, the element of relatability it carries still remains.
Over the course of the duo’s careers, they’ve been celebrating personal milestones, too. In the two-year gap between the release of their latest album Ouch (2024) and their previous album, LET’S JUST SAY THE WORLD ENDED A WEEK FROM NOW, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? (2022), much has happened in the duo’s lives.
Andy now has two kids, and James is now married.
“Things changed,” Andy quipped, with James chuckling as he expressed his agreement.
“The topics of what we’d sung about or what we’d written about were all covering becoming a father and the joys that come along with that, but also the difficult periods of time as well. Every album we write sort of encapsulates the last couple of years we’ve had,” Andy continued.
But all of their listeners still find a way to resonate with their music in any way they can. Take their song, “B I K E,” for example — a seemingly romantic track, but it was written about Andy’s son learning to ride a bike for the first time.
“It’s about you cycling around with him on the [back] of the bike. So, although you wouldn’t necessarily know it when you listen to it, it’s talking about the love for your child. But people can kind of fit themselves into the story however they like when they listen,” James told Rappler.
It comes as no surprise, then, that so many Filipinos — and fans from countries far from the UK — have come to enjoy HONNE’s music so much. The London-based duo has made several trips to the Philippines already in the past, the latest one a New Year’s Eve countdown to 2025.
So long as HONNE continues to make music, their New Year’s Eve performance definitely won’t be their last in the Philippines. – Rappler.com
