Since the Who We Be podcast relaunched in 2020, Henrie Kwushue has been at the helm, helping to spotlight the latest and greatest in the worlds of rap, R&B, Afrobeats, dancehall, and everything in between. It’s grown immensely since they took over the reigns from DJ Semtex, and now Henrie’s taking it global with a new three-part film where she takes a look at the Black music epicentres of London, Kingston and Accra.
Henrie’s first stop was her home turf, kicking things off with a live report of Notting Hill Carnival. She was right there, in the heart of the action, giving viewers the lowdown on the costumes, the history and, to varying degrees of success, tries to pick up some of the latest dance moves to break out on the floats. She also connects with Love Island star Indiyah and together they got stuck into some Trinidadian culinary classics.
In part two, we’ll see Henrie over in Accra, Ghana, where she’ll get a guided tour from local legend Smallgod. Together, they’ll take a look at the city’s unique take on drill (Asakaa) and get a front-row seat at Accra’s Global Citizen Festival where they take in sets from Usher, SZA, Stormzy, Gyakie, H.E.R., Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and Tems.
The final leg of Henrie’s trip took her to Kingston, Jamaica. There, she connected with local singer Jane Macgizmo who gave her the rundown on the best places to eat and the key spots to hit up for anyone new to the city. You’ll also get to see Henrie take a dance class with Laa Lee and drop in at a studio session with Roze Don, Teflon and Troublemekka.
Hit play on the first episode above and then look out for episodes two and three when they drop in the coming weeks.
