Guitarist Brent Hinds, who parted ways with Mastodon earlier this year, has blasted his former bandmates as “horrible humans” in a new comment on Instagram, while also calling the acclaimed metal group a “shit band.”
Back in March, Mastodon announced Hinds’ departure, stating, “Friends and Fans, After 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways. We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors.”
Shortly thereafter, Mastodon performed with fill-in guitarist Ben Eller at the Tool in the Sand festival, but eventually tapped Nick Johnston as their touring guitarist as they embarked on a spring run with Coheed and Cambria.

Mastodon recently shared an Instagram post celebrating the 11th anniversary of their album Once More ‘Round the Sun, with one fan commenting, “‘Halloween’ is definitely my #1 track on this record. Definitely gonna miss B. Hinds though.”
Hinds himself responded a few minutes later, “I want [sic] miss being in a shit band with horrible humans.” A screenshot (captured by Metal Injection) can be seen below.
In an interview with Guitar World shortly after Hinds’ exit from the band, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher said, “Like a marriage, sometimes people grow apart, and they get interested in other things. We wish nothing but the best for Brent in chasing his dreams.”
Mastodon will be on tour in the UK and Europe throughout the summer, including a set at the final Black Sabbath concert on July 5th in Birmingham, England.
