The film charts the Eraserheads’ story, from their breakup to the challenges they weathered through to stage their 2022 reunion
MANILA, Philippines – Eraserheads: Combo on The Run is slated to hit Philippine theaters nationwide from March 21 to 23.
The film charts the iconic OPM band’s story, from their breakup to the challenges they weathered through to stage their 2022 reunion.
Directed by Maria Diane Ventura, Eraserheads: Combo On The Run also explores how the band’s members came together at the height of the 2022 presidential elections.
“This is a comprehensive deconstruction of the band’s mythology, humanity, complex relationship and the lasting mark they left on Filipino culture — one that transcends generations and differences,” Ventura said, according to a press release.
The Filipino-American filmmaker expressed how lucky she was to have been able to witness the members open up about their true thoughts.
“Their candidness and forthright honesty were a gift. It wasn’t just cathartic for them; it was transformative for me as a filmmaker and audience member. It gave me permission to reflect on my own truths, and I hope it does the same for others,” Ventura shared.
Eraserheads: Combo On The Run was several years in the making, and Ventura admitted that it was a physically and emotionally taxing affair to complete.
“Each interview revealed new layers and complexities, which found us constantly reframing to deepen the narrative. Documentaries are a different animal, and I have tremendous respect for documentary filmmakers. It’s such a wild and unpredictable ride because it could go a million different ways. We’ve had over 30 reshoots over two years and 58 versions with the help of 4 editors. I’ve been so lucky to have had guidance from great friends, filmmakers and the band,” she said.
As of this writing, participating cinemas have yet to be announced.
Eraserheads is a Filipino rock band that was first formed in 1989. They are considered to be one of the most influential OPM bands, and played together for over a decade before disbanding in 2002.
Among their most popular tracks are “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” “With A Smile,” “Ligaya,” and “Pare Ko,” among others.
In the succeeding years, however, they held several reunion concerts — such as “The Final Set” in 2008 and 2009 — and some tours around the world here and there from 2012 to 2014.
Ang Huling El Bimbo: The Musical, a jukebox musical featuring The Eraserheads’ greatest hits, premiered in 2018.
In 2024, they also embarked on a world tour from July to December, making stops around the USA, Singapore, and Dubai.
The OPM band also received the UP Gawad Oblation Medal, a “symbol of deep gratitude for the extraordinary service rendered with or in [UP’s] name.”
