The release of the Deftones’ highly anticipated new album is “getting very close,” according to frontman Chino Moreno.
The singer offered the update in a newly published interview that was conducted back in December, so a couple months have already passed since Moreno made the remarks.
“So the plan is, obviously, to have a record sometime around that time [during the tour],” Moreno told Billboard Español. “It’s getting very close to being ready, so yeah, we’re excited.”
The tour in question — a North American headlining run with support from The Mars Volta — is kicking off tonight (February 25th) in Portland, Oregon, yet there’s been no official announcement of new music. Perhaps a summer or fall release is more realistic for the follow-up to 2020’s Ohms.
Deftones will also be playing a pair of stadium shows co-headlining with System of a Down in September. Those dates will likely be followed by the band’s Día de los Deftones festival, which is typically held in San Diego during the first week of November.
In the same interview with Billboard Español, Moreno said that he hopes to bring the fest to Mexico one day.
“We talked about it a lot recently, so it’s definitely in discussions to do so,” he said. “We would love to do it. I mean, I can’t promise, but, you know, it’s been growing really great.”
