David Lee Roth Pitched Movie to South Park Team

In a recent appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, comedian Bill Hader recalled a hilarious story from his days working on South Park when Van Halen singer David Lee Roth pitched a movie — starring himself — to the show’s creative team.

“When I worked at South Park, he pitched a movie to us where he was an assassin: ‘It’s about a guy trying to get his dog back,’” Hader told Conan and his co-hosts, impersonating Roth. Hader and the South Park crew had to remind DLR: “Yeah, they made this movie John Wick that’s kinda similar.”

Roth’s response was gold, as impersonated by Hader: “‘Nah, but the guy has a dog?! Whaddaya mean he has a dog?’”

As Hader recalled, South Park co-creator Trey Parker then threw DLR an alternate pitch: The movie would instead star Roth as himself basically, balancing his life as a member of a rock band and as an assassin who goes on missions.

“‘Nah, I don’t want those guys involved,’” replied Roth in reference to his Van Halen bandmates, as told by Hader, who made sure to point out that the South Park team was stoked to have Diamond Dave in the building, regardless of his DOA movie pitch.

“We were totally in awe,” Hader said. “‘Oh my god, that’s fucking David Lee Roth.’ And he did not disappoint at all. He was so sweet and nice, it was awesome.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, Hader waxed poetic about his love of the Van Halen brothers: “They’re so talented and such great musicians, but they were very touchy and would air out their grievances to anybody — and I always find that funny.”

Meanwhile, David Lee Roth recently played his first full concert in five years and is set to embark on a US tour this summer. The Van Halen legend will play more than a dozen shows, and you can get tickets here.
