Cut Copy Release “Solid,” First New Single in Five Years

Australian synth pop group Cut Copy have returned with their first single in five years, and teased bigger news for the near future. “Solid” is out now alongside its B-side, “A Decade Long Sunset.” Listen below.

“Solid” marks the band’s first new release since their last album, 2020’s Freeze, Melt. Speaking about the origins of the track, frontman Dan Whitford remarked that he has been tinkering away at it for a couple of years. “It’s a song that came out of a pretty chaotic time, both personally and globally, and in some ways it became a kind of mantra for me,” he said in an email to the Cut Copy mailing list. “‘Solid’ is about resilience, about holding on to your vision even when everything feels upside down.”

B-side “A Decade Long Sunset” is a more free-flowing experiment, clocking in at seven minutes. The band recruited Graham Lee of Australian band The Triffids to play pedal steel on the psychedelic track.

A limited batch of 12-inch vinyl (500 copies to be exact) has been printed in celebration of “Solid.” Pre-orders are ongoing at the official Cut Copy store.

At the end of their fan newsletter, they teased more new music and/or a possible tour soon: “More good stuff on the way — we’ve got a few things brewing we think you’ll be excited about…”

Cut Copy formed in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. In 2008, they released their second album In Ghost Colours via Modular, bringing them wider success. That record was produced with Tim Goldsworthy, formerly of DFA Records. Later, they released Zonoscope in 2011, which was nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 54th Grammy Awards.
