As part of Apple TV+ and Apple Music’s A Carpool Karaoke Christmas, Chappell Roan and her parents Kara and Dwight joined host Zane Lowe for a special SUV sing-a-long of her song “Pink Pony Club” on Sunday night.
The segment featured Lowe driving Roan and her parents around rural Missouri in an SUV, complete with Christmas decorations strewn about the car. As Lowe played “Pink Pony Club,” Roan and her parents sang along, with the latter two getting emotional — especially during lines that reference her midwestern family.
After the song concluded, her parents discussed its impact. “That song… I love singing it with her at her shows, I love it when you can just see the people respond to that song so much,” commented her mother Kara. “Even when we’re growing up, we really care about what our parents think of us… I hope that’s something that she always knows, that we love her so much and we could never not be proud of her.”
Her father was even more emotional, breaking into tears and remarking, “What she stands for is a lot of hope… but what she has taught me as a father is respect for other people and all people,” Dwight said. “That’s what I want people to understand, everything that is about her is about loving everybody… and she has taught me that.” Elsewhere in the episode, Kara and Dwight showed Lowe around their farm in Missouri (where a chicken named Lady Gaga resides), and Roan met up with some high school friends at Andy’s Frozen Custard. Chappell Roan wasn’t the only superstar to appear in A Carpool Karaoke Christmas. The hour-long Carpool Karaoke special also featured segments with Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa. All three sang a handful of Christmas carols and medleys, with Roan singing Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” Lipa singing “Sleigh Ride,” and Gaga singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” as well as a rendition of her original holiday tune “Christmas Tree.”
Lady Gaga’s segment was an especially wild ride, featuring a performance of “Highway to Hell” with AC/DC singer Brian Johnson, a short cover of Led Zepplin’s “Black Dog,” and a chat about her upcoming album as well as her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die with a Smile.” “It was crazy,” Gaga said about the collaborative track. “I went to see him at like 10 o’clock at night. He played me the idea and then we wrote the second verse, then we cut it at 2 in the morning. Bruno had me singing for four hours. He had an exact way that he wanted to hear it and I wanted to give him that.”
Meanwhile, for her segment, Dua Lipa took Lowe Christmas shopping in Tokyo, sang a short rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and discussed a particularly inspirational Katy Perry concert she attended as an adolescent where she was invited onstage. “I was like, I want to be on that stage. I want to perform. I want to do rooms like this. I now play ‘Dance With Somebody’ at the end of every single one of my shows,” Lipa told Lowe.
