Bruce Springsteen has unearthed a stirring song called “Faithless,” which will appear on his upcoming compilation Tracks II: The Lost Albums, out June 27th (pre-order here).
“Faithless” was originally intended as the title track of a soundtrack for a film that was never completed. Springsteen wrote and recorded much of the song and soundtrack in between the conclusion of the “Devils & Dust” tour in November 2005 and the release of “We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions” in April 2006. Springsteen claims he wrote the entire soundtrack for the film before it began production; the full soundtrack for the “spiritual Western” film included four instrumental pieces and featured a similarly meditative tone to “Faithless.”
“This was a really unusual collection of songs,” The Boss said of “Faithless” and the unreleased soundtrack in a press release. “You could recognize details and maybe a character or two. But for the most part, I just wrote atmospheric music that I thought would fit.” Atmospheric certainly applies to “Faithless,” which blooms along with patience, majesty, and Springsteen’s own mythic presence. “I woke by the rocks of the river faithless, faithless, faithless/ Then I met you,” he croaks in the first verse above gentle guitar and a touch of twang. All of the Faithless soundtrack will appear on Tracks II: The Lost Albums, a collection of unearthed recordings spanning from 1983 to 2018. The package serves as a sequel to 1998’s compilation Tracks, which featured a similarly sprawling mix of unheard sessions, demos, and B-sides. The new Tracks compilation is comprised of seven albums, totaling 83 songs, 74 of which were previously unreleased. Springsteen is also curating a 20-song companion release, Lost and Found: Selections from The Lost Albums, which will feature “Faithless” as well.
He previously previewed Tracks II with “Blind Spot,” a cut from his hip-hop-inspired Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, and “Rain in the River” from the lost album Perfect World. Tracks II: The Lost Albums will arrive on June 27th; pre-order the box set here.
