The UK media watchdog Ofcom says it has logged more than 800 complaints about the BRIT Awards 2025 ceremony. Most of them are about Sabrina Carpenter’s performance included a medley of “Espresso,” “Bed Chem,” and “Rule Britannia!”
Sabrina Carpenter opened the awards show hosted at The O2 in London on Saturday. She wore a red sparkly mini-dress and matching stockings and suspenders with a front that resembles the King’s Guard uniform. At one point she’s perched on a pink and purple heart bed while singing, surrounded by dancers doing a dance routine while on their backs. The outfit Sabrina is wearing changes to a red teddy with stockings—with Sabrina posed provocatively while singing.
Charli XCX also received some complaints, mostly aimed at her black dress and a comment she made during one of her acceptance speeches. The Essex superstar managed to snag five awards so she was on and off the stage all night. “I heard that ITV were complaining about my nipples,” she said during one of the speeches. “I feel like we’re in the era of ‘free the nipple’ though, right?”
Speaking about the complaints received, an Ofcom spokesperson told the BBC, “we are assessing the complaints against our rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.”
The total number of complaints received was 825, which is a drop in the bucket compared to some incidents that prompted review from the media watchdog. The most complaints ever received was 58,000 in 2021. Those complaints followed comments Piers Morgan made about Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.
With so few relative complaints in comparison, it’s unlikely that Ofcom will investigate further. The television watershed in Britain is 9:00 pm; that’s the moment when content no longer has to be child-suitable. The BRIT Awards started at 8:15 pm and ended at 10:40 pm. So depending on where the performances on the time the performance aired, it may have been past the child-friendly cut off.
