Black Flag Unveil New Lineup, Tease First New Music in 12 Years

Black Flag have announced a new lineup surrounding founding guitarist Greg Ginn.

The new lineup was unveiled in a post on the group’s Instagram page, with Ginn now joined by vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez, and drummer Bryce Weston. The announcement also teased the band’s first new music in 12 years, along with upcoming live performances.

“We’re turning the page,” the post reads. “BLACK FLAG is entering a new era — and we’re hyped to welcome three incredible new members… the new lineup is already in the studio and the rehearsal space — writing, jamming, and bringing fresh energy.”

Ginn resurrected Black Flag in 2013 with the release of the comeback album What the…, a widely-panned effort that Ginn has since acknowledged as subpar. The Black Flag name has been marred with negativity ever since.

Singer Ron Reyes, an original member of the band and frontman on the comeback album, was fired onstage shortly after its release, and he later went on to accuse Ginn of child abuse following claims made by Ginn’s ex-wife, Marina.

In an email to Consequence in 2014, Marina said that Ginn left her “destitute, battered and without child support” after their relationship ended in 2006. She accused him of then exploiting and blackmailing her. Public court records in Long Beach, California confirmed that Ginn pleaded no contest to domestic battery in 2006, and he was sentenced to three years of probation.

In addition to his personal issues, Ginn caught backlash from longtime fans in 2013 after he sued former bandmates Keith Morris, Dez Cadena, Chuck Dukowski, and Bill Stevenson for violating the Black Flag trademark — which he owns — while reuniting under the moniker FLAG. That lawsuit was settled in April the following year.
