Billy Joel’s ex-wife, Elizabeth Weber, insists that the singer isn’t responsible for her divorce from her first husband, Jon Small.
“I never thought of Bill as the homewrecker,” Weber told US Weekly on Friday, adding that she had to “tread carefully” because “Jon and I didn’t have a great romance.”
Weber had an affair with Joel, 76, during her marriage to Small, who was the “Piano Man” singer’s best friend and bandmate. The affair caused the band to break up and Joel to fall into a depression.
“The home was wrecked,” Weber told the outlet. “We didn’t have a deep connection, Jon and I. Almost in a way, my life began again when my son was born. Sean just lit up every room. He was an adorable, precocious child.”
“So I really never thought of Bill as a homewrecker because there wasn’t much home to wreck,” she added.
Joel, who was married to Weber from 1973 to 1982, opened up about their affair in his HBO documentary “Billy Joel: And So It Goes” which came out last month.
“I was just in love with a woman,” Joel stated. “And I got punched in the nose, which I deserved.”
Small revealed in the doc that he took Joel to the hospital after his second suicide attempt and saved Joel’s life.
“The only practical answer I can give as to why Billy took it so hard was because he loved me that much and that it killed him to hurt me that much,” Small said. “Eventually I forgave him.”
Weber told US Weekly that she and Joel have a friendly relationship today.
“But, he has a wife and he has children and, right now, he’s struggling with something that’s … that’s a big thing,” she shared, referring to Joel’s brain disorder diagnosis. “So [our relationship is] as close as it needs to be for two people who decided to divorce 40 years ago.”
Weber added: “I have my grandchildren that he knows and they know him. And his relationship with Sean is important to both of them. So we’re not distant, but we’re, you know, and he lives in Florida and I live in California. But it’s all good.”
Joel revealed in May that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, which occurs when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up inside the skull, presses on the brain and disrupts cognitive functioning.
Weber publicly spoke out about Joel’s health battle after he announced his diagnosis.
“I just want him to be restored to good health so he can enjoy his life and his wife and his children. He earned that,” Weber told E! News in June. “The restoration of his good health is all I really care about.”
Joel is currently married to his fourth wife, Alex Roderick. His other ex-wives include Christie Brinkley and Katie Lee.
