Kyle Meredith sat down with Ben Barnes to talk about his debut album, Where the Light Gets In, and the whirlwind experience of his first major tour. Inspired by classic soul and rock influences like Stevie Wonder and David Bowie, Barnes wanted the record to reflect all stages of a relationship, from infatuation to heartbreak. “I wanted it to be about all the things I’ve felt in relationships, not just some of them,” he explains. Despite his background as an actor, Barnes admits that hitting the road as a musician brought a whole new set of challenges. “It was more grueling and testing than I thought, but also way more thrilling and fulfilling,” he says. Barnes also opened up about how performing live transformed his perspective. After nervously stepping onto the stage at the start of the tour, he found his confidence by the time he reached venues like Los Angeles’ The Wiltern and London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. “By the end, I actually felt like I belonged there,” he says.
As for his acting career, Barnes is shifting gears back to the screen with the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Institute, where he plays a morally grounded character — a refreshing change after a string of villainous roles. He describes the project as a thrilling departure and even used music to get into character, curating a playlist to capture the vibe. “I’m excited for people to see this one,” he says, hinting that fans can expect something unexpected from the series.
